Project Information
Description
The NJTPA, in collaboration with Jersey City, is leading a project to enhance safety along Garfield Avenue, from Merritt Street to Grand Street. This 2.5-mile stretch of Garfield Avenue, a designated truck route and urban arterial with high pedestrian, bicycle, and vehicular activity, has 11 signalized and 20 unsignalized intersections. Safety issues include antiquated traffic signals, sidewalks that are narrow and/or in poor condition, faded road striping, limited visibility at intersections, and inadequate lighting, all of which contribute to unsafe conditions for all road users.
Proposed improvements include upgraded traffic signal equipment for improved visibility and accessibility, reconstruction of all sidewalk and curbing, widening sidewalks at key locations locations, construction of curb extensions, resurfacing the roadway, and new pavement markings. Utility poles, traffic signals, and street furniture will be relocated as necessary to improve pedestrian access while grading changes and updated signage will further enhance safety and compliance with current standards.
